Royals Rumble Porters in Homecoming Shutout

Massimo Cipriano Sports Oct 21, 2019

On October 5, the bleachers were filled with purple and white as the Port Jefferson community anticipated a homecoming match up between their Royals and the visiting Greenport Porters. Coach Andrew Cosci’s team came into the game expecting to have a significant advantage with the home crowd behind them, against a team who had yet to break open the win column.

From the opening kickoff, the Royals put on a show, and never gave the Porters a chance to recover. Senior quarterback Sam Florio inspired the Port Jefferson offense with a rushing touchdown and four passing touchdowns, including a composed sling down the field to a speedy Justin Everson. Sophomore Luke Filippi amassed 157 rushing yards and pounded for two touchdowns on the ground, as well as a passing touchdown when he replaced Florio under center.

The final result was a 62 point shutout for the Royals, with a 48 point first half that had the crowd on its feet. This is sure to provide the Royals with momentum as they rise to 2–3 and look to make a dominant playoff push. Next week, they head to Elwood to face the John Glenn Knights in their next league contest. If they can keep playing with this composure and confidence, they are sure to make a name for themselves as the playoffs approach.
